Gripe Water Ingredients & Dosage

The original Gripe Water ingredients contained 3.6% alcohol, dill oil, sodium bicarbonate, sugar, and water, but today’s mixture contained many different ingredients which depend on the brand and country of the production. You may not know that Gripe water was discovered by William Woodward in the 1840s while treating fen fever. It became available in the market for the first time in 1851.

List of Ingredients of Gripe Water

Here is the list of common Gripe Water ingredients that are found in most brands in the market. It may be noted that the ingredients listed below may vary from brand to brand.

  • Dill Oil.
  • Fennel Oil.
  • Deionized water.
  • Sodium Bicarbonate i.e. Baking Soda (In India it is called Sarjikakshara)
  • Cardamom, Cinnamon, Ginger, Chamomile, Licorice, Clove, Lemon Balm or Peppermint.
  • Flavors: Fennel, Apple, and others
  • Preservatives: Sodium Methyl/Propyl Paraben, Sodium Benzoate, Citric acid, Potassium Sorbate.
  • Sweeteners: Vegetable glycerin and Sugar.
  • Anethum Graveolans oil.

Correct Dosage of Gripe Water

To know about the correct dosage of gripe water is very important. If you provide an inconsistent dosage of gripe water to your baby, then it may lead to various problems and side effects. Here is the correct dosage of Gripe water that one should always follow while giving it to your baby.

Note: These are just according to the standards, but it is advisable to take doctor’s advice before making up your mind for the final time.

Age Group Recommended Dosage
0-1 month 2.5ml, ½ teaspoon daily.
1-6 month 5ml, 1 teaspoon – 2 times daily.
6 month-1year 10ml, 2 teaspoon – 3 times daily
1 year and above 10ml – 15ml, 2 -3 teaspoon – 3 times daily.
